Living in Lincoln University

Lincoln University takes its name from its location on the outskirts of the small rural township of Lincoln, Canterbury, New Zealand which has a resident population of around 3,000.

The learning institution began life as a School of Agriculture in 1878, linked to Canterbury College in nearby Christchurch, which was later to become the University of Canterbury. The first intake of students was in 1880.

It remained Canterbury Agricultural College until 1961, when it was officially named Lincoln College and made a constituent college of the University of Canterbury. In 1990 it separated from the University of Canterbury and became a full and self-governing university in its own right. Lincoln University is New Zealand’s smallest university and the third oldest, and the research-led institution specialises in land-based disciplines and their associated industries.

The population of the town swells to over 7,000 when Lincoln University is in term and the new Lincoln development will provide conveniently close residential options for the largely commuter-based core of the university. When the new development is completed, it will provide a seamless, green link to Lincoln University’s tree-filled, park-like grounds.
