Living in Lincoln sustainable living

The best definition of sustainable living is the definition by Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and Chairperson of the World Commission on Environment and Development.

The definition suggests that sustainability is defined as "forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without comprising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”.

In moving towards sustainable living and being environmentally friendly we are attempting to reduce our ecological footprint. This equates to reducing the resources we use, the waste we produce and the emissions we produce. We must address the following areas to achieve environmental sustainability:

  • Waste & recycling
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Building design
  • Alternate transport
  • Landscaping
  • Paper & purchasing

Environmentally Friendly Living

It’s natural to want to live in an area with such outstanding rural vistas. That’s why the ‘The Dairy Block’, where this new sustainable development will be constructed, will be protected and enhanced through a program of ecologically sustainable development.

We plan to minimise the impact on the environment by reducing local pollution and noise, conserving resources, preserving the landscape and encouraging native plants. This new environmentally friendly community will also feature varied shrubs and trees in the streetscapes and open spaces to create a natural feel, minimise the need for watering and attract local birdlife.

The site also features living waterways which promotes wildlife and acts to reduce urban pressures by treating stormwater run-off.

The waterways and wetlands assists in clearing stormwater run-offs from roads, gardens and other land surfaces.

The entire sustainable development has been designed to encourage walking and cycling as well as reducing the noise, emissions and energy requirements of the residents. Whether it is connecting to the existing town, the University, the public transport or the local commercial centre, the scenic walkways and cycleways offer the best method of safely ‘getting around’.
